Substitutions Help App Store listing

Common questions

What makes a good backup?

The customer should get what they ordered. Good backups:

  • The same item (same flavor, color and size) from another production run, pack or model.
  • Several smaller sizes that add up to the size ordered.

Avoid a different flavor, color, edition, a bigger size, or less than what was ordered. If you're unsure, email us.

Why isn't my rule swapping orders?

Open the rule and check its status:

  • Standing by: the variant is still in stock. The rule kicks in when it sells out.
  • Needs attention: inventory tracking is off, or every backup is out of stock.
  • Off or Draft: turn the rule on.

You may also have reached your plan's order limit. See Plans and limits.

Does the customer pay more if the backup costs more?

No. The customer pays their original price. See How substitutions work.

Will customers know about the swap?

Checkout doesn't change, and the app doesn't email them about the swap. If it matters, tell customers in your own order or shipping emails.

Which orders were swapped?

Look for the Substitutions: success tag in Shopify, or open a rule and click View activity.

What happens if I uninstall?

The app stops swapping orders, and it can't change your store after it's uninstalled. Any variant that had a rule turned on keeps Continue selling when out of stock, so it keeps selling with no backup.

Before you uninstall, turn off your rules: turning a rule off turns Continue selling off for its variant. If you've already uninstalled, turn off Continue selling on those variants in Shopify.
